This Specialization introduces you to Sikhism through its origins, beliefs, historical development, lived experiences, and challenges across time and place. Other topics include Sikh music, art, literature, and aspects of Sikh society. You will begin by examining core doctrines, ethical principles, and the origins of Sikh identity in the Punjab region, then trace the community’s evolution through key historical moments, including colonialism and contemporary changes. Finally, you will explore Sikh cultural expression, social structures, and the global diaspora, with a focused look at Sikh diaspora communities in the United States and California, including comparative perspectives with respect to other minority communities.
Applied Learning Project
Across the Specialization, you will complete quizzes, written assignments, and a final paper that synthesize your understanding of Sikh beliefs, history, culture, and contemporary issues. These activities help you interpret key concepts, analyze historical developments, and apply your learning to modern Sikh experiences in global and American contexts.
